Fractured Fairy Tales

What is a Fractured Fairy tale, you might ask... well, it is a story that either includes elements from one or many "original" fairy tales OR takes the original story and changes it all up. One of my favorite well known fractured fairy tales is Prince Cindersby Babette Cole. In this hillarious retelling, a fairy grants a small, skinny prince a change in appearance and the chance to go to the Palace Disco. Unlike Cinderella, he did not lose a glass slipper, but rather his pants!

Another favorite fairy tale is:

And the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon And the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon by Janet Stevens

At the end of their nursery rhyme, Dish and Spooon decided to really run away and their friends (cow, dog, & cat) go looking for them. The story shows a great use of nursery rhymes, fairy tales and puns and the kids will have fun figuring out what characters belong to which rhyme. Older readers will understand those, younger readers will just like the story based on a favorite nursery rhyme. Makes a great read-a-loud.

If your child is interested in fractured fairy tales, be sure to check with your library. There many great books out there to be recommended (or contact me! I'll be glad to send you a list!)
